Custom-made
Made according to your exact specifications (to the eighth of an inch), versus
ready-made that you can get in a home center that has a limited number of sizes
available. The sizes in the price chart are for pricing purposes only, but
the product is made according to the width and height you give.
Mount
Determines where your blind or shade will be installed. Inside: A window treatment
installed within the window opening(between window jambs). The factory will
take the appropriate deductions for an inside mount application. Outside: A
window treatment installed on or beyond the window casing. The factory will
not take any deductions. Some products may measure wider than given measurement.
Inside
Mount
An
Inside Mount fits within your window frame. It is a sleeker and normally
the preferred way to install your window coverings, as long as you
have enough depth. It's normally better to use an Inside Mount even
if your product is not flush with the front of your window (i.e.
it sticks out into your room). Specify the exact window opening size
and the factory will automatically deduct a fraction of an inch to
your product so it does not rub against the side of your window.
Also see the How to Measure section for more specific measuring guidelines.
L-frame
Inside
Mount L-Frames (shown at left) ARE fully recessed in the window opening.
Ideal for windows with decorative molding or uneven outer surfaces that
prevents use of a z-frame. Please note: out-of-square windows may require
application of caulk.
Outside Mount L-Frame (not shown). Installed on 2" of flat mounting surface on
the area surrounding the window. Recommended for applications where an inside
mount is not possible due to insufficient window depth, inward tilting windows,
etc.
Z-frame
Inside mount Z-Frames
are NOT fully recessed in the window opening. The frame is designed to
wrap around the front of the opening and frame the window, eliminating
light gaps, creating a custom made fit.
Recommended for most inside mount applications.
Outside Mount
A window treatment
installed on or beyond the window casing. The factory will not take any
deductions. Some products may measure wider than given measurement.
When ordering shutters, please keep in mind frames are included in size,
so you may need to add to your measruement for a proper fit.
Louvers
The
horizontal pieces that rotate to provide light control and privacy.
Depending on the brand and type of shutter material, louvers sometimes
come in widths of 1-1/4”, 1-7/8”, 2-1/2”,
3-1/2”, 4-1/2”. The larger the louver size, the more light and visibility
you get when the louvers are opened. Also, larger louver sizes are best used
on larger window sizes and are more contemporary than the smaller sizes.
NOTE: Not all shutters come in the louver sizes shown.
Cafe Shutter
Cafe
shutters do not span the entire height of a window. They leave the top
portion of a window opening completely uncovered. They normally go up
only half way, but you can designate how high you want your cafe shutters.
And a
cafe shutter will not have a top frame or bottom frame .
Rear Tilt
Shutters with rear tilt offer a discreet operating system that is barely
visible from the front of the product and integrates discreetly into
the back of the shutter. To operate, simply tilt one louver to the desired
position, and the rest will follow. The rear tilt operating system offers
a sleek contemporary look, expansive views and easy cleaning.
Window Depth
Measure
from the front edge of your drywall or front edge of trim surrounding
your window opening back to the first obstruction. This could be a handcrank,
security device, ledge, or the window itself. Note whether this distance
is 1½" or
more. If so, you can select an Inside Mount.
Divider Rail
Divider rails add strength
to your shutters, and allow you to operate the top louvers independently from
the bottom louvers. Divider rails do not allow you to swing open the top section
of a panel separately from the bottom like a horse door. The measurment for the
divider rail should be measured from the bottom of the shutter to the center
of the divider rail. This position may be altered slightly depending on louver
and shutter sizes.
